Himalaya foothills
We'll travel from Rishikesh along untouristed pilgrimage routes visiting the highest Shiva temple in India and ending up back on the plains tracking tigers, this retreat has it all.

You'll also discover the wonderful mountain people and their simple yet rich lives that will remind you of the vibrancy of living.

Peaceful Rishikesh guesthouse We'll meet at Delhi and travel by express traIn to Rishikesh where we'll spend some restful days in a very special and beautiful peaceful guesthouse a few km out of town, beside the holy Ganges.

We'll watch the beautiful Arti ceremony by the Ganga and meet one of the many spiritual teachers who visit or reside in Rishikesh.

Himalayan waterfall invigoration

The guesthouse also has a refreshing waterfall which simply has to be experienced! On our final day in Rishikesh we'll spend one day in silent meditation to allow you to go deep within and prepare for your journey to the high Himalaya.

From Rishikesh we'll head towards the mountains along the yatra pilgrimage routes and visit the profound Vashista Gufa cave where we will meditate deep in the mountainside just as many sages have meditated and lived here before.

Beautiful Mountain lake bathed in rhododendron floweres We've timed it so that we'll be in the mountains before all the pilgrims arrive yet in time to see the stunningly beautiful rhodendron forests coming into bloom and perhaps drink some of their liquid ambrosia. We'll travel in modern cars into the heart of the Himalayas, and visit an incredible emerald green lake nestled in an amphitheatre of white peaks - written about in the epic Mahabarata.

The next day we'll hike up to 3680m to the highest Shiva temple in India where we truly will be touching the skies, and communing with the mountains in the most direct way possible. You cannot avoid being utterly blown away.

The majesty of the high Himalaya

We'll have left civilisation far behind at this point but the beauty of the mountains will more than make up for that. We'll head back toward some degree of civilisation and I promise you'll enjoy those creature comforts that much more intensely as a result of your short abstinence.

Baijnath Temples Our next section takes us on the dramatic mountain road towards Joshimath, where we take the cable car up to Auli at 3050m and the possibility of some skiing! It's a beautiful sight watching the sunrise over the peaks of Nanda Devi. We'll say goodbye to the high mountains and head back down to the plains following the beautiful river Pindar stopping off at the special 12th century Baijnath temple and visiting the magical Parvati shrine.

Comfortable Kausani room

We'll stop at the extemely comfortable Sun n Snow in Kausani, just a stroll away from the Anasakti Ashram where Mahatma Gandhi wrote his introduction to Anasakti yoga, and where we can join in with the evening puja there.

We'll stop off in Ranikhet to stay in a charming old colonial hotel in the woods enroute to the Jim Corbett National Park.

Fabulous luxury safari tents in Corbett Our next two days will be a very special experience in exclusive and luxury accommodation located right in the heart of the National Park.

It's the only non government accommodation situated in the Tiger sanctuary and is very expensive but oh so worth it!

Elephant safari in Corbett What makes this venue so special is it's location in the park. In keeping with the park regulations you'll stay in luxury safari semi permanent tents.

We'll have jeep and elephant safaris looking for the elusive king of the jungle and you will have truly memorable evenings under the stars with only the wildlife to enchant you and the most fabulous food ever!

We'll have a late checkout to make the most of our magnificent surroundings before we hit the road for Delhi, where sadly we have to say goodbye.

The beautiful Taj Mahal

For those of you who want to extend your trip you have the option of stopping on the way to Delhi at the royal heritage hotel - Fort Unchagaon. Set in a charmingly typical rural indian village, it's a peaceful stopover for a visit to Agra and the unmissable Taj Mahal. We would arrange your transportation to Agra where you'll stay overnight at Agra to catch the Taj Mahal in the morning as well as Agra Fort and Fatephur Sikri. You'll then head back to Delhi by taxi. This extension is extra and you can tailor it however you wish, but will not involve your tour leader (but could involve a local guide if required).

This retreat includes all your food, transport, accommmodation, park entrance fees, jeep safaris, guide fees, meditation classes and our lovely tour leader for the duration of the retreat.
